Hilleberg Akto
£395 from Amazon.co.uk
This is probably the most recommended tent for solo camping – lightweight, durable, and easy to erect.
There’s a hundred and one tents out there, and I looked at about half of them. The two which it was a decision between were the Terra Nova Laser and this. The Laser is essentially the same design, but lighter. The reason I went with this in the end, other than the sheer reputation of Hilleberg, was because of some of the small design features, and also because I was concerned that the weight saving aspects of the Laser may compromise the durability.
Two words of advice: make sure you open all the vents (you won’t get wet, even in a typhoon), and make sure you sleep with your head at the right end (where the door is) – it makes a difference.
When I bought this it was available for £290 from RayMears.com.
Alas, it’s now cheaper elsewhere – £390 from Amazon.co.uk
Pros:
Lightweight and durable
Surprisingly comfortable and spacious
Incredibly easy to erect
Easy to pack
Cons:
Expensive
You really should buy the footprint (additional £20) to ensure durability (and to stop mud getting in the tent)
